LGBTQQ Youth Organization Seeks DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
Organization Description
Founded in 1988, the Lavender Youth Recreation & Information Center (LYRIC) provides supports and services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth, 24 years of age and under. LYRIC's mission is to build community and inspire positive social change with LGBTQQ youth, their families, and allies of all races, classes, genders, and abilities. LYRIC facilitates community building and social change with over 500 youth and outreaching to another 1000 annually. The organization has a current budget of approximately $1.2 million and 10 full-time and 3 part-time employees. For fiscal year 2009-2010, approximately 70% of LYRIC's budget is supported by government funding, 20% by foundations and corporations, and 10% by individuals.
Position Summary
LYRIC is seeking an experienced development professional to direct and enhance our strong portfolio of current development strategies and to steer LYRIC's new Grassroots Social Justice Fundraising Initiative which aims to align development activities with LYRIC's social justice model using youth-adult partnership and youth development frameworks.
The Development Director (1 FTE) is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing all development strategies. The Development Director supervises a .8 FTE Development Associate and a .5 FTE Development Assistant. The Development Director reports to the Executive Director, is a member of LYRIC's Leadership Team and is accountable to working in collaboration with the whole LYRIC staff team. The Development Director is the main liaison to LYRIC Board's Development Team [LYRIC's Board follows a youth-adult partnership model].
Responsibilities
· Develop and implement annual fundraising plan, including individual giving strategies (major donor campaign, phone bank, direct mail), institutional giving strategies (foundation and corporate grants), planned giving strategy and events.
· Work with LYRIC as a whole to foster a full vision for its Grassroots Social Justice Fundraising Initiative and steer its implementation.
· Work collaboratively with Board members and the Board's Development Team, staff, and community members/volunteers on fundraising strategies.
· Provide support to development staff in the areas of planning and specific development strategy execution, internal organization collaboration and communication, and donor/funder communications.
· Develop structures, policies, and procedures for fundraising.
· Work with Fund Development Staff Team (Executive Director, Development Associate, and Development Assistant) to develop revenue projections and aspects of the agency budget related to Fund Development revenue and expenses based on feasibility and cost benefit analysis considered best practice in the field.
· Work with Executive Director and Fiscal Manager to prepare for annual audit.
· Expand, improve and maintain strategies for cultivation, stewardship, tracking and acknowledgement of individual donors.
· Develop and maintain relationships with foundations and corporations including cultivation and stewardship, and submission of grant proposals.
· Work as part of government grant proposal response team along with other directors.
· Create and supervise production and distribution of solicitation materials and publications (e.g. e-newsletters and annual report).
· Maintain donor database (Raiser's Edge).
· Represent agency at various events as needed.
· Report to Executive Director, staff and Board of Directors on a regular basis on fundraising activities and progress.
· Facilitate development staff recruitment, hiring, promotion, disciplinary actions, and employment separation with the guidance and subject to the direction of the Executive Director.
· Participate as a member of LYRIC's Leadership Team, with Executive Director, Deputy Director and Program Director(s), to ensure alignment of strategies and activities throughout organization in support of LYRIC's mission and programs.
· Attend agency staff meetings and Board meetings.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Fund Development
· Five or more years of development work experience.
· Experience in setting-up and maintaining development operations.
· Excellent written and verbal communication.
· Demonstrated success in raising at least $150,000/year in individual contributions for non-profit organizations.
· Creative and innovative approach to fundraising and ability to link organization's mission, programs, and priorities with donors' interests in giving.
· Familiarity with LGBTQ giving culture and working contacts in the philanthropic community.
· Experience in communications planning and implementation of diverse communication strategies.
Management and Leadership
· Self-motivated and ability to take initiative, manage, and complete multiple projects within deadlines.
· Skills and energies to build a team and lead effective staff development and training, including a commitment to ongoing self-improvement.
· Excellent interpersonal skills and group facilitation skills.
· Excellent project management and planning skills.
· Experience with budgeting, fiscal management and fiscal reporting.
· Excellent computer skills with proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel and database software.
Organizational
· Knowledge of youth issues, particularly LGBTQQ youth.
· Commitment to youth development, social justice and anti-oppression principles and practices.
· Commitment to developing and supporting leadership by youth and other historically marginalized/under-represented communities.
· Experience and competencies in working in a multiracial, multicultural environment.
Salary
Salary: $60,000 - $70,000 per annum and commensurate with experience. Position includes full benefits package.
